Gränges secures 100 percent renewable electricity in Newport

Gränges has taken another important step in its sustainability journey by securing renewable electricity for the operations in Newport. The site is thereby Gränges’ first of three US production facilities to reach 100 percent renewable electricity.

Investing in renewable energy is a strategic priority for Gränges since it reduces the carbon footprint from own operations (scope 1+2) and enhances its capability to produce sustainable products.

Gränges works actively to increase the usage of renewable energy across all operations to reduce its carbon footprintGränges Americas Inc. has now secured 100 percent renewable electricity for 2024 through renewable energy certificates, which complements the solar electricity sourced through the partnership with the regional electricity supplier Entergy Arkansas.

"We are deeply committed to protecting the environment and fighting climate change. That is why we have taken a crucial step towards decarbonization and sustainability by ensuring renewable electricity supply for our Newport facility. This is another step on the journey to reducing our carbon footprint," said Uriel Soberanes, Energy Engineer.

Gränges ambitious climate goals for near-term 2030 and net-zero 2040 have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative to be aligned with the latest science and consistent with the goals of the Paris Agreement.

In 2023, approximately 61 percent of Gränges’ sourced electricity came from renewable sources. Gränges’ operations in Finspång, Swedenand Shanghai, China, sourced 100 percent of its electricity from hydropower whereas the operations in Konin, Polandsource75 percent from hydropower.

Continued strong focus on higher use of renewable energy in Gränges’ own operations, along with recycling and low-carbon primary aluminium sourcing are key pathways to reach its net-zero goal.
