Do you have any questions about Gränges? Start with checking in our list with common questions.
The foundation for today’s Gränges was laid in 1896 in Grängesberg. Over the years, several industrial enterprises became part of the Group. In 1969, the Group acquired Svenska Metallverken, which included an aluminium products business, an operation that would later evolve into Gränges.
Gränges has about 3,500 employees and net sales of SEK 23.5 billion.
Gränges is a leading global supplier of rolled aluminium products for thermal management systems, speciality packaging and selected niche applications.
Gränges’ end-customers are found in the automotive, HVAC, and speciality packaging industries as well as in other niche markets such as transformers and wind turbines. In materials for brazed heat exchangers, Gränges is the global leader with a market share of approximately 25 per cent.
Gränges has a total production capacity for rolled aluminium products of about 800 ktons, spread across eight production sites on three continents.
In Europe, Gränges has two production sites: one in Finspång, Sweden (120 ktons), and one in Konin, Poland (140 ktons).
In Asia, Gränges has two production sites: one in Shanghai (140 ktons), and one in Shandong (160 ktons).
In the Americas, Gränges has three production sites in the U.S.: Huntingdon (Tennessee), Salisbury (North Carolina), and Newport (Arkansas), with a combined capacity of 240 ktons.
Gränges also has a wholly owned subsidiary, Gränges Powder Metallurgy GmbH, producing aluminium billets using advanced spray-forming technology. The company has two facilities, one in St. Avold, France and one in Velbert, Germany, with an annual production capacity of about 2,500 tons.
Gränges sells rolled aluminium. The products are priced per ton.
Gränges’ revenue model means that the cost of raw material (aluminum) is passed on to customers. Gränges therefore does not make money on the metal itself.
The company generates revenue by selling advanced materials manufactured for specific customers and applications under long-term contracts. Pricing is based on the added value that Gränges delivers in terms of material properties and product complexity.
Gränges’ end customers operate in the automotive, HVAC, and specialty packaging industries, as well as in niche markets such as transformers and wind turbines. The automotive industry accounts for about 42 percent of sales, HVAC for about 24 percent, specialty packaging for about 18 percent, and other end markets for the remaining 16 percent. Gränges has a strong position in all regions where it operates.
Asia accounted for 20 percent of Group sales volume in 2020. China is the main market, with India, Thailand, and South Korea also being important. The automotive industry accounted for 87 percent of sales in Asia in 2020, with global customers representing 45 percent of the sales volume.
Europe represented around 17 percent of Group sales volume in 2019. The Czech Republic, Sweden, Germany, and Poland were the largest markets. The automotive industry accounted for 73 percent of sales in Europe in 2020, with global customers accounting for 64 percent of volume.
The Americas accounted for about 64 percent of Group sales volume in 2020, of which 20 percent were sales to the automotive industry and 80 percent to the HVAC & Other segment. The main markets in the Americas are the U.S. and Mexico, and global customers accounted for around 12 percent of total sales volume.
There is a constant need to reduce energy consumption and costs and to improve reliability for manufacturers and users of vehicles, air conditioning systems, and heating systems. Demand is rising for more energy-efficient engines and heat exchangers.
The drive to reduce environmental impact and greenhouse gas emissions affects the automotive and HVAC industries, increasing demand for lighter products and improved efficiency.
The automotive industry
Demand for heat exchanger material is strongly linked to global vehicle production and the number of heat exchangers per vehicle - which tends to increase due to requirements for better performance and expanded functionality. A higher share of hybrid and electric vehicles, along with vehicles equipped with advanced features, also supports increased demand for heat exchanger materials.
Brazed aluminum heat exchangers represent nearly 100 percent of the automotive market today.
The HVAC industry
HVAC includes systems for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. Key market drivers for heat exchangers include housing starts, consumer confidence, and environmental regulations.
Brazed aluminum heat exchangers make up only a small share of the total HVAC market. Gränges supplies material for both brazed and mechanically assembled aluminum heat exchangers, with its strongest market position in the Americas.
Speciality packaging
Aluminum foil provides a complete barrier against light, oxygen, moisture, and bacteria, making it ideal for food cartons and pouches. Container foil is divided into three main categories: household/institutional foil, semi-rigid containers, and flexible packaging. For decades, the use of foil has grown steadily in all categories. Semi-rigid containers are among the most versatile packaging types and are widely used for pre-packaged foods, withstanding extreme temperature variations from freezing to heating.
Other markets
Examples of other areas that we are serving are the development of heat exchanger materials and solutions for industrial applications, agricultural machinery, and wind power turbines.
Another end-market in North America is materials for transformers. A transformer is an electrical device used to increase or decrease the alternating voltages in electric power applications. It consists of two or more coils called windings, which are wrapped around a core. In North America, aluminium plays an important role in the design of electrical distribution and large power transformers thanks to its significant cost and weight advantages versus copper. The markets for semi-rigid containers and transformer windings made in aluminium are expected to show stable annual growth.
Gränges’ sustainability efforts are led by Group Management and the SVP Sustainability, who coordinates and drives the global sustainability strategy, long-term targets, and sustainability-related policies. The Board of Directors reviews and approves the global sustainability strategy, long-term targets, policies, and the annual sustainability report.
Group Management ensures that the sustainability strategy and targets align with the company’s vision and business strategy. They also monitor sustainability performance and make decisions regarding global sustainability priorities.
Each of the five sustainability pillars is governed by a representative from Group Management, who proposes global priorities and works with regional teams to implement local sustainability initiatives. Regions ensure that local strategies and targets are in place.
Sustainability is a natural and integrated part of Gränges’ core business and strategy. It strengthens the company’s long-term competitiveness and creates lasting value for customers, employees, investors, and other stakeholders. By managing its operations sustainably and responsibly, Gränges enhances its ability to deliver strong financial and operational results.
Gränges is committed to improving the environmental and social footprint of the aluminum value chain and participates in several industry initiatives to support sustainable aluminum production and use.
Sustainability is one of four key business drivers in Gränges’ strategy. The company has a Group-wide sustainability framework consisting of 13 material topics across five sustainability pillars. Each pillar has clear long-term commitments and targets for 2025, and each is governed by a member of Group Management who coordinates global and regional sustainability activities.
