Every single day is an adventure for Hannah

Meet Hannah Belew, Human Resources Assistant in Huntingdon. Hannah really enjoys being a part of a company that has such a positive influence on the community.

So Hannah, tell us a little bit about your background and why you’re working at Gränges?

Gränges has always been a part of my life, whether I knew it or not. Growing up in rural Huntingdon, TN; Gränges has made a huge impact on our community, contributing several jobs to our locals. In fact, most of my friends, while growing up, had parents who worked at the plant.

In 2017, I graduated from Freed-Hardeman University with a BA in Human Resources and set out to start a career in the field. I worked in Human Resources throughout college as an intern and loved every minute of it. So, when I heard there was an opening in my hometown at Gränges, I just knew I had to apply.

Having the opportunity to work in the Human Resource department has been everything I could ever dream of. Human Resources Assistant is more than a job title, it’s a way of life for me. I love being able to work side-by-side with employees to help them figure out problems and to positively impact their day. Being able to be a part of a company that has such a positive influence on our community has truly been an amazing part of my job.

What does a Human Resources Assistant do? What’s your scope/objective?

Human Resources Assistants collaborate with the Human Resources Manager in completion of administrative tasks such as: managing incoming job applications, scheduling interviews, and assisting employees with any questions they might have. Human Resources Assistants also take part in recruitment, retention, community awareness, training and development activities.

The job demands an advanced skill set, such as: conflict management and decision-making skills, maintaining employee relationships, problem-solving, being precise, and efficient in scheduling. My objective is to utilize my knowledge in Human Resources with communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills in such ways that benefit the company overall.

What does a typical day look like for you and what are you currently working on?

My typical day is never the same. Some days, I can be in meetings all day, and others, I can have a line out the door of employees who need help. Every single day is an adventure to the next. It is never dull and always exhilarating. Every day, I work on status change forms for employees changing jobs, pay rates, and departments. This is essential to ensure employees are getting paid at the correct rate. During recruitment periods, you will find me reviewing applications and scheduling interviews, searching for the best talent to bring in. Making sure we find great employees for Gränges can be an extensive process, but the outcome is highly rewarding when done right.

Training and safety are a big part of my day as well. Between monthly safety meetings, behavioral audits, and my own personal audits I get the opportunity to learn more about the operations, while also having the ability to develop lasting relationships with employees. My typical day can be summed up by many as hectic, but to me it is simply rewarding. I am very thankful for each new day, and the people I get to create new relationships with.

What do you like most about your job? What’s the best with working at Gränges?

What I love most about my job is the people. Working in Human Resources has privileged me by allowing me to work alongside some amazing people. I am a very personable person, so I love creating lasting relationships with the employees here at Gränges. When these relationships are created with my coworkers, I can earn their trust, letting them know that I will always have their best interest in mind.

If you could change one thing about working here, what would it be?

Working in the manufacturing industry has made me realize that employees really need good families surrounding them to make them the best employees they can be. My dad has worked in this industry for over 25 years now. He had to work swing shift, midnights and now days. During his swing shift and midnight days I remember all the sacrifices that he and my mom would make for us growing up. All the games that he had to miss, and my mom had to make sure a grandparent could go with one of us and she with another one. Most days it was almost like my mom was a single parent due to the fact dad would work 12-hour midnights. It was very hard, but my entire family made those sacrifices along with him so that we could have an amazing life. I want to acknowledge all our hard-working employees and their amazing families that back them up every single day. We would not be this great company without them. My goal every single day is to be the smiling face that might make their days or nights a little better while at work and away from their families.

And finally, what do you do when you’re not at work?

When I leave work, I am typically spending time with my family. My family is very athletic, so we are usually at a sporting event cheering each other on. When we are not busy cheering from the stadium, we are either at church, camping together on our off weekends, or chilling at home having quality family time. My family means absolutely everything to me, so I try to cherish every moment possible with them.
